Expert advice provided by Calgary Co-op Cannabis Budtender Karrie.

Keeping your bong clean goes beyond appearance. Regular cleaning improves flavor, delivers smoother pulls, and helps maintain a safer, more enjoyable experience. Over time, resin and bacteria can build up inside your piece, affecting taste and making it harder to use.

The good news is that with a few common supplies and a little time, you can restore your bong to a fresh, crystal clear state.

Why Cleaning Your Bong Matters

A clean bong enhances airflow, preserves the natural taste of your cannabis, and prevents lingering odors or mold. Routine maintenance also extends the life of your glass and keeps your setup looking well cared for.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following items:

  • Isopropyl alcohol (90 percent or higher) to break down resin and disinfect
  • Coarse salt such as Epsom or rock salt for scrubbing
  • Warm water
  • Pipe cleaners or bong brushes
  • Rubber gloves (optional)
  • Plastic bags or containers
  • Paper towels or a microfiber cloth

Step by Step Guide to Cleaning Your Bong

Step 1: Rinse the Removable Parts

Remove all detachable pieces, including the bowl and downstem. Rinse each piece with warm water to flush out loose debris and prep the glass for a deeper clean.

Step 2: Mix the Cleaning Solution

Fill a sink, basin, or container with warm water and add isopropyl alcohol using a roughly equal ratio. This combination helps loosen sticky residue while sanitizing your bong.

Step 3: Add the Salt

Sprinkle a few tablespoons of coarse salt into the solution. The salt acts as a gentle abrasive that helps remove buildup alcohol alone cannot dissolve.

Step 4: Soak Everything

Submerge your bong and all removable parts in the solution. If your bong is too large, a large plastic bag or container works well. Smaller pieces can be placed in zip top bags filled with the solution.
Allow everything to soak for at least 30 minutes so the alcohol and salt can fully break down the residue.

Step 5: Scrub Thoroughly

After soaking, use pipe cleaners or brushes to scrub each piece. Pay extra attention to high resin areas like the downstem, bowl, and percolator. This step helps remove stubborn buildup and restores proper airflow.

Step 6: Rinse Completely

Rinse each component several times with warm water to remove all traces of alcohol and salt. There should be no lingering smell or residue once finished.

Step 7: Dry and Reassemble

Dry all parts using paper towels or a microfiber cloth. Once everything is fully dry, reassemble your bong. Your next session should feel smoother, cleaner, and more flavorful.

Bonus Tip

For extra shine, finish with a quick rinse using hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Rinse again thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Safety and Responsibility Notes

  • Always handle isopropyl alcohol with care and keep it away from heat or open flames
  • Never smoke or inhale until your bong is completely dry and free of alcohol
  • Dispose of used cleaning solution responsibly

A clean bong makes a noticeable difference. A little regular care goes a long way toward better taste, smoother sessions, and a more enjoyable experience overall.
